A scholarly study ennobled by a love for both Christianity and Buddhism.
We are pleased to announce the recent launch of a significant new book, Studies in Buddhist Christian Relationships: Selected articles by Elizabeth J. HarrisStudies in Buddhist Christian Relationships: Selected articles by Elizabeth J. Harris. Recently launched at the EISD, this work is published as part of the Tulana Jubilee Publications (2025) and represents a major contribution to the field of inter-religious dialogue.
About the Author & Her Journey at Tulana
Dr. Elizabeth J. Harris is a renowned academic, historian, and promoter of understanding among religions. Her journey with Sri Lanka began in 1986, eventually leading her to become a vital part of the Tulana Research Centre for Encounter and Dialogue. Here, she received guidance from our founder-director, Fr. Aloysius Pieris, s.j., whom she credits for deeply shaping her academic path.
In his preface to the book, Fr. Aloysius Pieris warmly describes Dr. Harris as ‘someone who has lived much of her life in solidarity with Sri Lanka’—a sentiment that perfectly captures her deep involvement and commitment to inter-religious understanding.
Inside the Book
The collection brings together the “cream of her scholarship” spanning almost four decades. It features 14 insightful essays divided into three key areas:
- Part I: Buddhist-Christian relations in Sri Lanka under British colonial rule (exploring the encounters between Buddhist monks and Christian missionaries).
- Part II: Buddhist-Christian relations after 1948 in Sri Lanka (discussing post-independence rapprochement, ‘double belonging’, and the impact of dialogue).
- Part III: General Buddhist-Christian studies (covering themes such as women in dialogue, spatial dimensions of religion and conflict, and profound theological concepts).
Reviewed highly by Prof. Asanga Tilakaratne (Emeritus Professor of Buddhist Studies, University of Colombo), the book is praised for achieving a rare degree of objectivity, noting that the author beautifully exemplifies a deep love for both Christianity and Buddhism.
