EDIRI Project Empowers University Students to Champion Human Rights and Counter Misinformation

August 21, 2026

On the 20th of July and 3rd of August at Tulana Research Center, university students from the University of Kelaniya participated in two interconnected workshops exploring human rights, minority rights, social justice, stereotypes and hate speech.

The workshop is part the project: “Paths and Practices of Education, Dialogue and Reconciliation in Sri Lanka”, AID 12970/01/7 EDIRI funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and promoted by Fondazione MAGIS ETS and the Trustees of The Society of Jesus in Sri Lanka

Through interactive activities, group discussions and practical exercises, participants learned to recognize stereotypes and discrimination, identify misinformation and harmful online content, and develop counter-narratives to challenge hate speech and promote inclusion.

The workshops addressed the experiences and rights of minority communities in Sri Lanka, transitional justice, social inequality and the importance of truth, accountability and inclusive participation, and highlighted the importance of interreligious and intercultural dialogue as a tool to promote mutual understanding, respect, peaceful coexistence and social cohesion.

The sessions strengthened participants’ critical thinking, communication and civic engagement, encouraging them to become active promoters of respect, equality, dialogue and social cohesion within their communities.
